Helen Verbanz SeagrassIn 2008, I was invited as artist in resident to the The Studios of Key West (TSKW), in Key West, Florida. I produced an electronic installation entitled, "SeaGrasses", in response to human destruction of the sea grass in Florida's shallow waters of the lower keys. I programmed numerous servo motors and used reflective two and three dimensional materials to animate a constructed ocean-scape of seagrass. The repetitive pulsing movement and sound of the servo motors' and rhythmic swish and sway of the seagrass create a soothing calm, yet odd menacing effect. The installation alludes to the passive trance-like acceptance of a seamless boundary between technology and nature. |
